Personal Summary

Dr. Robin Parent stepped into her role as the Director of Student Engagement fall 2016. Prior to the University of Montana, Robin spent three years as the Inclusive Excellence Instruction Specialist at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. In this role, she participated in faculty development and curriculum change around diversity and inclusivity in the classroom. She has designed and facilitated many workshops on topics such as: Inclusive Teaching, University Climate, Threshold Concepts, Program Assessment, Undergraduate Research, Mentoring Underserved Populations, as well as teaching courses for the Women and Gender Studies program.

Robin’s academic background includes several degrees from Utah State University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, a master’s in Folklore, a graduate certificate in Women and Gender Studies, and a doctorate in Education. While at USU she taught English for 15 years, was a lecturer in the College of Education for 4 years, and also taught for the Gender Studies program. Through these experiences, Robin was able to teach in China, lead a service trip to Cuba, mentor students in the k-12 teaching program, and serve as an academic advisor for Theta Nu Xi, a multicultural sorority.

Through her passion for inclusive education and cultural studies, Robin is a mentor, scholar, researcher, and advocate. She is dedicated to ensuring that students have access to resources that will support their academic and personal efforts, which includes the recruitment and retention of students, faculty development to create welcoming learning environments that support student success, and continuing a research agenda with a focus on UM students and culture.

On a more personal note, Robin enjoys swimming, reading dystopias, rivers, and hiking. She moved to Missoula with her husband, Micah, and son James. She has two children in college. Her daughter, Morgan, is at Mills College in Oakland, and her son Connor will be attending Southern Oregon University. Robin is looking forward to enjoying the seasons, meeting students, faculty, staff at UM, and the folks of Missoula.
